We're officially two weeks into the New Year, and with the holiday season through, many of us are finally turning our attention to those New Year's resolutions we set back on December 31st.

Working as a luxury interior designer, this time of year is often one of my favorites. It's a time when homeowners are turning their attention to the lifestyle choices that will support their overall happiness and well-being—and so many of those choices begin with the home.

You see, when we approach interior design as a tool that supports our habits, goals, and daily rituals, we move beyond aesthetics, creating a space that's truly functional in helping us cultivate our very best lives—and there's nothing more beautiful than that.

It's a practice I encourage my interior design clients to keep in their focus year-round—and I encourage you to do the same! That's why today's blog is all about New Year home design and the five interior design resolutions I think everyone should consider as we move through 2025. I hope they inspire you to make this year your best year yet!

Five Interior Design Resolutions for 2025

Trade-In Passing Trends For Timeless Home Design

If there was one piece of advice I could offer homeowners before they invest in a luxury home refresh, it's this: "Timeless over trendy, always."

Our spaces are an investment in ourselves, and the design choices we make should feel lasting and deeply personal. While trends can offer us wonderful inspiration, the best inspiration comes from looking inward at our own experiences, preferences, and needs.

From there, we can lean into some universally timeless interior design choices, like neutral, organic palettes and minimal, uncluttered layouts, to bring those unique desires to life in a way that enriches our lives and makes us fall in love with our spaces now and in the future.

If a major home renovation is in the cards for you this year, or even if you're just thinking of investing in a few statement pieces to refresh your space, start by reflecting on what details resonate most with you and your lifestyle. This reflection will be the foundation for all your design choices moving forward.

Bring The Outside In With Biophilic Design Techniques

A stunning remodel by Stephanie Larsen transforms this home into a modern retreat, featuring sleek architectural lines, cozy textures, and breathtaking views that blend luxury with comfort.

The last five years have taught us much about the benefits of being outdoors, maximizing our time in nature, and connecting with our surroundings—but what’s often overlooked is that the mental and physical benefits of time outside can just as well be applied inside the home, too.

Biophilic design is the concept of introducing natural, organic elements into our interiors (think of it as bringing the outdoors in), and a few additions can go a long way in grounding our spaces, enhancing mood, reducing stress levels, and improving our quality of life at home.

Adding indoor plants is a simple starting point. Peace lilies, weeping figs, and bamboo are beautiful indoor options with excellent air-purifying abilities to help reduce the airborne toxins found in our interiors. Additionally, mirrors can help reflect house plants and exterior views, amplifying the feeling of nature indoors.

You can also incorporate less obvious biophilic design elements, such as natural shapes (think flowing curves and abstract forms) and earthy palettes. Some of my favorite biophilic details to include when designing luxury homes in Arizona and beyond are warm, neutral tones, hardwoods, natural stone, geode crystals, hair-on-hide textiles, linens, and tranquil water features.

Embrace Indoor-Outdoor Living with Luxurious Patio Additions

Stephanie Larsen elevates outdoor living with this luxurious poolside design, combining modern architecture, seamless indoor-outdoor flow, and serene mountain views for the ultimate retreat.

Embracing the outdoors at home also means looking at how we can maximize our outdoor living spaces, and a focus on transitional living should be on everyone's radar in 2025.

Consider installing accordion doors for a free-flowing footprint between indoor and outdoor living spaces. From there, you can think about how you want to use your space. If you love cooking for family and friends, installing a state-of-the-art outdoor cooking and dining area may be the perfect choice. For others, adding a pool, cold plunge, jacuzzi, or secluded outdoor shower may better suit their lifestyle and wellness needs. The focus is uniquely your own, but considering how to embrace your property's exterior spaces is a resolution that will help make the most of your home this year and for years to come.

Enhance Your Kitchen with Wellness-Focused Additions

For many people, New Year's resolutions are centered in the kitchen—prioritizing healthy, home-cooked foods and time spent sharing meals with family and friends. A few modern interior upgrades can do wonders to support these resolutions.

Stephanie Larsen brings contemporary elegance to this Sedona home with a sleek, minimalist kitchen design that features clean lines, natural light, and seamless access to outdoor living spaces.

For instance, I'm a huge advocate for installing fresh herb boxes within arm's reach of a kitchen window or adding a wellness bar with herbal teas, infused waters, and a juicer to a kitchen nook. These wellness bars can also be outfitted with water filtration systems and boiling water taps to ensure the highest-quality drinking water is instantly available whenever needed.

You can also enhance mental clarity by reducing kitchen clutter. Consider introducing panel-ready appliances that blend seamlessly with existing cabinetry or adding a butler's pantry for everyday gadgets, like coffee machines and toasters, to be tucked away from sight without reducing ease of access.

Prioritize Rest By Transforming Your Bedroom Into A Sleep Chamber

Finally, we end in the bedroom with a resolution likely top of mind for most homeowners: getting better rest.

For this goal, creating a sleep chamber is the epitome of modern interior design. This approach introduces details like double-glazed windows and blackout window coverings to minimize light exposure and noise pollution, incorporating soft, breathable bedding (like linen or organic cotton) for nighttime comfort, and installing intelligent lighting systems to optimize our sleep routines by mirroring our circadian rhythms.

As a simple first step towards creating a sleep chamber in your home, consider removing stimulating distractions by making your bedroom a no-screen zone and adjusting your smart thermostat to a lower temperature at night for more comfortable rest.

Our homes are a vital tool in supporting our health and happiness, and by reflecting on our hopes for the year ahead, we can guide our design choices toward the interior upgrades and resolutions that will bring these aspirations to life. May 2025 be a year filled with living beautifully!
